Spring Two-Day Event is Coming Soon!

Get Ready for Tuesday AND Thursday Next Week! 

TUESDAY

Our annual Spring event is next Tuesday and Thursday (April 25 and 27) at Morris Williams. The Spring event is a two-day team competition.

The first day (Tuesday) we will play 2-person Best Ball Net.  Both players play their own ball for 18 holes and record their GROSS score for each hole. The scores will be adjusted for handicap (hole by hole) when turned in, to create a NET score. The player with the lowest NET score for each hole will be added together to create a total team score. Results and adjusted Thursday tee times will then be posted. There will be no handicap updating at this point.

THURSDAY

On the second day (Thursday) we are playing a two-person scramble. Each player tees off and a best shot is selected. Both players then hit their next shot from the selected spot (within one club length, or 6 inches on the green) and continue to do this until the hole is completed and a score is recorded.

You will keep your same team for each day. You will also have the same (or very close) tee time for Tuesday and Thursday. When you check-in on Tuesday expect to pay course and Event fees for both days. If you are riding in a cart, you will pay cart fees each day separately. 

Keep in mind that for this event, prize money is DOUBLED. So bring your best game to take home the big bucks (actually credit in the pro shop for various goodies)! We look forward to seeing everyone at the course. 

As a final note: no doubt everyone will be proudly wearing their white ASGA golf hats for this annual event. If you do not have one, just email the president and we will get one to you at the course. The cost is $20 and the inventory is down to single digits, so do not miss out. Good luck!

Golf ATX Updates

 Upcoming Activities at the Four Austin Courses We Play

Morris Williams Driving Range will be closed April 17th - April 21st to replace the mats and resurface some eroded portions of the landing area, as you know, those mats have taken a beating over the last two years and it is passed time. Clay/Kizer mats are next and we do not anticipate a closure for that replacement.

The Lions Spring Partnership is scheduled for April 22-23 and that facility will be unavailable for open play until close to 5pm on those days. This is a really fun event and some of the best teams in the State will be battling it out on those historic grounds. We have also secured the appropriate bids to have the netting replaced on #14 and hope to have that work complete in a month.

Morris Williams greens are going through a rough transition. The poa annua grasses (bad stuff) have been taking us over the last couple of years and it is back this year as well. Combine that with the temperatures in the 40's/50's last week and that creates a bad combination. We are seeing progress and have full faith those greens will be really good again in the near future. The message to you is that they are ugly but ok.

The phone queue experiment went well at Morris Williams and we plan to get the same system in place at Clay/Kizer and Lions in the next month. We are going to continue with Morris Williams and work out the kinks.

Our closure list is long in May, we have the opportunity to make some applications that will control our summer weeds and will continue to have a positive effect into the fall and next winter.

State High School Tournaments are coming back to the Golf ATX Courses. Clay and Lions will be unavailable until after 2:00 on:

Well, last Tuesday was a big turnout even with the Texas winds. Golf TV narrators say that the Texas players know how to play in the wind!

Partner Spring Event is Coming

Our Spring event is taking place at Morris Williams next month on April 25th and 27th. Unlike our annual Individual championship event, we play both sessions of this Partner Spring Event on Tuesday and Thursday of the same week. First up on Tuesday is the two person best ball net, then on Thursday we play two person scramble. The Spring event is one of  our most popular. We look forward to seeing everyone out there.

Looks Like Winter Is Over

The weather is turning hot again and soon it will be in the 100-degree area. Last year we played several times on very hot days. Bruce Jones has been working with ATX courses to try and get them to allow us eight-minute tee time intervals instead of the currently required ten minute intervals. So far, no success but we will keep trying.  The main way you can assist is to watch your pace of play. It is very important to keep moving so everyone can finish and get out of the heat. If the heat and time does not bother you, please let Bruce know and we can place you with a later tee time.

ASGA White Hats

We are almost sold out of the new summer white ASGA hats, we only have 14 left. After the final 14 are sold, that will be it--done, finito, sayonara. If you need a back-up (remember IT IS WHITE), now is the time to get one. You can purchase a hat from our website or reply to this message with your name and number of hats you want and we’ll deliver it to you at the course.

2022 is winding down and we thought we would give you a snapshot of some of the things the Austin Senior Golf Association (ASGA) accomplished last year. These numbers were calculated using our Grand Prix calendar year (Nov. 2021 – Oct. 2022).

• Our average membership participation for the 53 events throughout the year was 94 — 10 of these were played when the daily high was over 100°.
• Highest attended event was 118 players. It was a February Two-Best-Balls tournament.  20 events had 100+ attendees.
• Total rounds played by our members for score and posted -- 5,286 !
• The 10 four person events had the highest average participation (100 players)
• We played at Morris Williams the most – 18 times
• We had over 100 members attend our annual end of the year banquet
• We increased the number of members participating in our annual ASGA championship by over 50%

Three golfing partners died in a car wreck and went to heaven. Upon arrival, they discover the most beautiful golf course they have ever seen.

St. Peter tells them that they are all welcome to play the course, but he cautions them that there is only one rule:  "Don't hit the ducks during your first three months here.”
The men all have blank expressions, and finally one of them asks, "The ducks?
"Yes", St. Peter replies, "There are thousands of ducks walking around the course, and if one gets hit, he quacks, then the one next to him quacks and soon they're all quacking to beat the band.  It really breaks the tranquility, and if you hit one of the ducks, you'll be punished.  Otherwise everything is yours to enjoy.”

Upon entering the course, the men noted that there were indeed large numbers of ducks everywhere.  Within fifteen minutes, one of the guys hit a duck.  The duck quacks, the one next to it quacked and soon here was a deafening roar of duck quacks.
St. Peter walked up with an extremely homely woman in tow and asks, "Who hit the duck?"  The guy who had done it admitted, "I did."  St. Peter immediately pulled out a pair of handcuffs and cuffed the man's right hand to the homely woman's left hand.  "I told you not to hit the ducks,", he said. Now you'll be handcuffed together for eternity.”

The other two men were very cautious not to hit any ducks, but a couple of weeks later, one of them accidentally did.  The quacks were as deafening as before, and within minutes St. Peter walked up with an even uglier woman. He cuffed the man's right hand to the homely woman's left hand. "I told you not to hit the ducks," he said; "Now you'll be handcuffed together for eternity.”

The third man was extremely careful. Some days he wouldn't even play for fear of even nudging a duck. After three months, he still hadn't hit a duck.

St. Peter walked up to the man at the end of the three months, and had with him a knock-out, gorgeous woman - the most beautiful woman the man had ever seen.  St. Peter smiled at the man and then, without a word, handcuffed him to the beautiful woman and walked off.
The man, knowing that he would be handcuffed to this woman for eternity, let out a contented sigh and said aloud, "I wonder what I did to deserve this?

The woman responded, "I don't know about you, but I hit a duck.”
