Rodriguez comes from behind to win GP championship

What was it that Yogi Berra used to say or was attributed to him, "It's never over til it is over"?Well, Terry Rodriguez realized the meaning of that statement when he came from behind in the last individual tournament of the Grand Prix Points championship season by placing high enough in his flight to overcome a 3.5 deficit to the league leader, Bobby Johnson. Rodriguez placed fifth in the first flight at the Bluebonnet Golf Course held a week ago Tuesday and that was enough for nine points and a final point total of 118.5.

Burks and January take the Team Grand Prix title

Chester Burks and Roy January were 2.5 points behind the team of Don Visness and Travis McWhorter going into the final tournament of the Team Grand Prix. Having led the team GP standings for most of the season, Burks and January picked up nine points with a high finish in their flight at the Two-man Select tournament held at the Lions Golf Course and it was just enough to put them back on top for good. Burks and January finished with 138.5 points and the championship.

Don Akers does it again!

Don Akers is on a roll! Back in September Akers broke the bank with a hole-in-one shot that earned him $445. It seems that Akers can also handle a pencil as well as a golf club. Thursday, the Morris Williams staff chose Akers as the Cleanest Scorecard winner for last Tuesday's 4-man tournament held at MoWillie.

Visness (left) and McWhorter
Travis McWhorter and Don Visness have surged to the lead in the Team GP standing after high finishes in recent tournaments. McWhorter and Visness have 132 points and are only 2.5 points ahead of former leaders, Chester Burks and Roy January. With only one tournament remaining these two teams will be battling it out for the team championship next week at Lions.

Bobby Johnson roars to GP lead

Bobby Johnson hits another long drive
Less than a month ago, Bobby Johnson, was sitting in seventh place in the Grand Prix standings with 87.5 points and nine points behind the two leaders, Troy Collins and Vic Loar. Today, Johnson sits on top of the standing as the lone leader with 113 points with only one tournament left until a Grand Prix champion is determined. Johnson's meteoric rise to the top was based on solid play in the tournaments but his first place finish in the Annual ASGA Championship pushed him to the top. The championship tournament is worth double points and Johnson

Earl Klattenhoff claims Hole-in-One Jackpot

Earl Klattenhoff has been playing golf for well over fifty years starting back in 1955 and in that time has made nine hole-in-ones including the one at the recent tournament held at Jimmy Clay. Klattenhoff was playing with partners Lee VanBurkleo and Willard Hebbe when he hit a nine iron to the newly revamped #5 green at Clay and holed the ball for his ace.  This hole-in-one, however, had a big payoff as it was worth $385 which comes from the Hole-in-One Contest administered by ASGA board member, Travis Eckert.

Travis has been busy lately paying off the winners as Klattenhoff is the second winner in the last two weeks and with Don Akers scoring a hole-in-one on September 15th at Morris Williams.

Klattenhoff is a long time member of the ASGA having been a member for the last 15 years. Asked what he planned to do with his big payoff, Klattenhoff said, "I'll probably take my wife, my son and his wife, along with several other close relatives and treat them to a nice dinner somewhere."
