East Takes Series Lead Over West

Going into the second round of the East/West series, the West led the rivalry with a 2-1 record and had a one win lead on the East. Apparently some East members saw this as an insult and took matters into their own hands. In the match at Morris Williams on January 5th, the East scored a 71.54 to 72.17 victory to tie the standings at 2-2 in the win-loss columns. Ray Harper led the way for the East victory with a round of net 62. He was followed by Don Theiss with a 64 and Dewayne Digby with a 65. L. D. Washington, Terry Rodriguez, and Troy Collins racked up net 66s to round out some of the low scoring for the East. In all, however, it was the consistency of the East team that won the day as 30 of the 50 players scored under par. For the West,
Randy Nichols, Bill Zuraitis, and Ed Edmunds led with net 65s. Jim Bennett finished with a 66 while Les Bevil and David Galindo shot 67s in a losing cause.
The East continued their winning ways at the next tournament at Morris Williams on February 2nd. The East squad went even lower in pulling out the win with a 69.64 to 70.74 victory. This win put them on top of the East/West series with a 3-2 record while the West remained at 2-3. Again, it was the consistency of the East players that produced the win. Richard Ortiz and Cliff Rierson led the way by shooting net 60s to top all East players. Richard Martinez followed closely with a 61, Don Steussy had a 63 while a 65 was shot by a slew of players, David Westlund, Roy January, Don Hafner, Willie Johnson, Wayne Patterson, Donald Garcia, Fred Conder, and Dewayne Digby.
For the West, brilliant play was also on their agenda as Don Akers had the lowest net score so far of the season topping all players with a 58. Rey Morales was also in on that display of fine golf as he recorded the second best score of the season with a 59. Ed Stokes finished with a 61 and Denis Ching had a 63 for the West but these low scores were not enough to blunt the deep bench of the East.
The East finished off this round of the series with another victory over the West at Hancock only two days later on February 4th. A small contingent of East players led the team to the victory with the lowest score of the season, a 66.33. The west had their highest team score of the season with a 75.75. The East was led by Travis McWhorter and Ken Garrett, both shooting a net 66. This was backed up by a 67 from Paul Redden to round out the scoring for the East. Carl Hedrick led the West with a 70 followed by Bobby Johnson's 73.
The East upped their season record to 4-2 while the West falls to 2-4. The East hope to continue their win streak into the next round in the series on March 1st at the Bluebonnet Individual tournament.
