Clay Update
When will we ever get back to playing golf at Clay? The bad news and good news are the same; we will probably be able to play Clay sometime in August. According to a recent letter from Kevin Gomillion, an official for the recreational department, and obtained by ASGA Board member, Frank Segura, the recent rains have slowed work progress and hampered the growth of grass on the new greens. With this much rain in the middle
of the summer, it promotes the growth of algae and fungus, not to mention the increase in the number of insects that cause extra headaches for the groundskeeper.
Have you seen the different look at Morris Williams? I am referring to the new native areas that are being developed there and will also appear at the Clay-Kizer complex. If you hit into these areas (and they are way off the fairway) you might not find your ball, and you might get lost as well. It is a move to eliminate some areas that were previously being mowed. This will save on costs and manpower usage.
We will also see improvements with the cart paths at Jimmy Clay, according to officials. That will be great for those of us that ride the paths in carts. Walkers will never know that feeling! Let's hope that the cart paths on Clay's hole #3 will be in that renovation. Along with these course changes will be work being done on the driving range. September is the date for its opening, probably before the 15th of that month. There is hope that the renovations will also cover the deteriorating greens at the Kizer course. Such a beautiful course deserves good greens. Many thanks will have to go to the recreational leaders who are heading up the work being done on these two courses. Let's hope for the best.
