Grand
Prix Individual race tightens
New contenders for the Individual Grand Prix title have
made a decisive run at Troy Collins, who has been leading the ASGA
membership for the past several months. Collins, who hasn't played
in the two most recent individual tournaments, has seen his lead
vanish and now finds himself
tied at the top with a hard-charging Vic
Loar. Loar, who was fifth two tournaments ago and nineteen points
from the top, has scored well in those tournaments and is now tied at the
top with Collins with 96.5 points.
Samuel Jenkins, having missed one of these tournaments as
well, has slipped from second down to fifth having been passed not
only by Loar but Jack Slayton (95) and Travis McWhorter (94). Slayton has maintained his position at third place but he too has put
the pressure on as he is now only 1.5 points behind Collins and Loar. McWhorter has been a consistent point scorer over the summer and now claims fourth place in the standings.
Long hitting Bobby Johnson has also made a charge from a
tie for 11th place to sixth, improving by 18 points since
the middle of August. Johnson has 87.5 points. Rufus Stanton, not
even in the top fifteen a month ago has dramatically changed his game
if improvement is any indication. Stanton has jumped up to a tie with
Andrew Brown at the number eighth spot in the ranking. George
Robbins, last year's GP winner, is more than holding his own with 86.5
points and seventh place. Robbins is now only 10 points out of first
place.
Interestingly, Frank Mang has the best per tournament
average for those players with three or more tournaments under their
belts. Mang is leading Bill Klipple in this category, 13.2 to 12.2.
David Weslund is pushing Mang and Klipple with an 11.2 average while
Henry Oshiro has an 11.1 average in five tournaments.
Travis McWhorter is the workhorse of the membership as
he has played in the most tournaments thus far by finishing in 14,
one more than Ken Garrett. Samuel Mihalik and Jack Slayton are tied
at 12 tournaments each.
