What was it that Yogi Berra used to say or was attributed to him, "It's never over til it is over"?Well, Terry Rodriguez realized the meaning of that statement when he came from behind in the last individual tournament of the Grand Prix Points championship season by placing high enough in his flight to overcome a 3.5 deficit to the league leader, Bobby Johnson. Rodriguez placed fifth in the first flight at the Bluebonnet Golf Course held a week ago Tuesday and that was enough for nine points and a final point total of 118.5.
But it wasn't an easy path to the top for Rodriguez as he had to look for some help from his two top competitors, Johnson and Travis McWhorter. Unfortunately for Johnson he was only able to garner three points to send his total to 116 resulting in a third place finish in the GP ranking. McWhorter, who was in second place before the tournament started, was able to hang on to his spot by picking up six points in his flight and finishing with 117.5, a single point behind Rodriguez.
George Robbins, last year's individual and team winner, made a valiant effort in trying to defend his championship. Robbins closed to within a point and a half of Johnson's total and finished only four points back of Rodriguez. He finished in fourth place with 114.5 points. Vic Loar picked up 9.5 points in his flight to finish in fifth place with 112.5. Loar held off Samuel Jenkins for that fourth spot as Jenkins finish in fourth place in his first flight competition picking up ten points to finish with 111.5 and sixth place.
Frank Segura secured seventh place with 108.5 points. Jerry Newton moved up to tie LD Washington for the eighth position with 107.5 points. A previous leader, Jack Slayton, took over the tenth spot with 107 points to round out the top ten in the individual Grand Prix race.
